Home to one of the largest elk migrations in the country, Jackson Hole is no stranger to herds of these antlered animals.
Summer in the mountains
During the summer months, elk make the climb high up into the deep alpine forests for cooler weather and better foraging.
Winter in the valley
Between December and April, up to 12,000 elk migrate from higher elevations to the National Elk Refuge, just 2 miles from town.
The fall rut
Starting in late August, elk begin their breeding season. You'll hear the bulls bugle, a high-pitched scream to assert dominance and attract cows.
In the winter, up to 12,000 elk migrate and center around the National Elk Refuge.
Elk antlers are one of the fastest growing tissues in the animal kingdom, growing up to an inch a day.
